Biotic and Abiotic Factors Activities for Middle School Science

The Biotic and Abiotic Factors Inquiry Lab is a hands-on activity that is differentiated for advanced, on-level, and modified middle school students. 

Students will classify and compare abiotic and biotic factors from two different biomes: the hot desert of Death Valley National Park and the deciduous temperate forest of Harpers Ferry, WV. They will “build” one or both biomes from resource tiles, then use continuous line transects to identify the abiotic and biotic factors.

The Biotic and Abiotic Factors Inquiry Lab includes a brief reading passage, comprehension checks, hands-on activities, reflection questions, and a CER conclusion.

The Biotic and Abiotic Factors Escape Room is an immersive experience for your students. It allows them to demonstrate their knowledge of the biotic and abiotic factors through interactive puzzles and challenges.  

Students must use what they have learned about biotic and abiotic factors to get the superhero to turn off the electric fences and allow the animals to get their water to complete the escape room.

The In the Mist - Project Gorilla Habitat STEM Challenge uses the engineering design process to research gorilla habitats and their daily habits and design and build a prototype of a gorilla habitat for a zoo. Students will also develop a way to educate visitors about the gorilla habitat.

Students will be using collaborative skills such as brainstorming with their peers and reflecting on their progress during the project.

At the end of the In the Mist - Project Gorilla Habitat STEM Challenge, students are given an opportunity to share their projects outside of the classroom.
