Never Too Old for Classroom Halloween Decorations

Do you decorate your door or science classroom for Halloween? Boo-lieve it or not, middle school students and even high school students aren’t too old to get into the Halloween spirit at school! Great Halloween ideas don’t stop in the lower grades. Even though they may not be able to dress up or participate in a costume parade like the younger ones, there are still plenty of ways you can give your tween and teen students a ghoulish grin in the month of October.

The easiest way to engage your science students and get them into the spooky spirit without creating too much of a stir is to decorate your classroom. I know that when I was a middle school teacher, I didn’t change up the décor in my room very often. It took extra time and funds that I didn’t have. But you don’t need much to give your classroom some new scary sparkle. You can frugally DIY Halloween-themed door, window, and wall decorations as simple ways to bring the holiday into your room on a small budget. Or better yet, you can mix it into your lesson plans and have the students do it all for you! You’ve probably seen Steve Spangler videos on his wildly popular YouTube channels or on his numerous appearances on Ellen. In fact, you’ve likely used many of his phenomenon-based demos to start off a lesson in your classes. One of Steve’s greatest strengths is creating one-of-a-kind video content that immediately engages all that see it.

Decorating your classroom door for Halloween is the best place to start. It’s the first thing students see when they enter your room, plus other students can enjoy it from the hallway and look forward to getting a closer look in your class. You can give a Halloween spin to whatever unit you are teaching or have students think of Halloween connections to things you have previously taught. To take the Halloween spirit even farther, you could start up a decoration contest in your hallway with each classroom using their subject as the basis for their door decorating idea. The more, the scarier!

Halloween bulletin boards in the classroom take the door idea and push it to a larger scale. You can choose to either set up a larger display with banners and pictures or posters, or you could use smaller posters for a weekly interactive board with one fact a day to last you the whole month of October! You could find these on your own or, like the door, have your students come up with ideas that relate to a scientific topic.

My favorite way to blend science and Halloween is to assign a choice project. Middle school students already love getting gross, spooky, creepy, and/or disgusting. Building those things into a project where they can research and present them to their peers is a win-win! You can then use the posters from some of the projects to decorate your room or the hallway.

If you have run out of time to do it yourself this year, I’m excited to share my newest poster set: Science Is Spooky. You can show your students how scary and strange science can be by decorating your door or bulletin board with these 40 printable posters. These work great as Halloween science décor, but they can also be used in your classroom anytime of the year!

Students will definitely take notice of these eye-catching posters, and it may even inspire them to do further research. Each poster includes a scary, spooky, or creepy science fact from many different science disciplines. The posters also provide the science explanations behind the facts.

Whether you decide to come up with your own ideas, or use mine, I hope you decide to bring Halloween into your classroom decorations this year. I promise it will help you and your students have a howling good Halloween – even at school!
