Periodic Table and Reactivity Activities for Middle School Science

The resources below will provide students a comprehensive understanding of the periodic table and reactivity. All of the following lessons are also included in the Kesler Science Membership.

After completing the Periodic Table and Reactivity 5E Lesson, students will be able to interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table, including groups and periods, and to explain how properties are used to classify elements. Lastly, they will be able to identify how valence electrons determine chemical properties, including reactivity.

The Periodic Table and Reactivity Inquiry Lab is a hands-on activity that is differentiated for advanced, on-level, and modified middle school students.


Periodic Table: Students will discover how the periodic table is arranged using groups and periods. They will classify elements into metals, nonmetals,
and metalloids.

Reactivity: Students will make observations about the periodic table and how elements interact with each other. Students will also analyze how protons determine what the element is and how valence electrons determine an element's reactivity.


The Periodic Table and Reactivity Inquiry Lab includes a brief reading passage, comprehension checks, hands-on activities, reflection questions, and a CER conclusion.

The Periodic Table Escape Room is an immersive experience for your students. It allows them to demonstrate their knowledge of the periodic table organization (valence electrons, periods, groups, families, reactivity) in a fun and engaging way.

Students must use what they have learned, including to describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron cloud; to develop models to describe the atomic composition of simple molecules and extended structures; and to use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms.
